A Conversation with Astrobiologist Dr. Nathalie Cabrol Dr. Cabrol is a French American Astrobiologist specializing in planetary science. Cabrol studies ancient lakes on Mars, and undertakes high-altitude scientific expeditions in the Central Andes of Chile as the principal investigator of the "High Lakes Project" funded by the NASA Astrobiology Institute. There, with her team, she documents life's adaptation to extreme environments, the effect of rapid climate change on lake ecosystems and habitats, its geobiological signatures, and relevance to planetary exploration. Cabrol was appointed in 2015 to head the SETI Institute's Carl Sagan Center for the Study of Life in the Univers With more than 300 million exoplanets in the habitable zone of their stars in our galaxy, the Milky Way, and up to 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe - to think we are alone or the only advanced intelligent civilization is pretty close to nonsense.

Dr. Rhodes earned a B.S. in Physics from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA; an M.A and a Ph.D. in Physics from Princeton University, NJ. After stints as a researcher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland and Caltech in Pasadena, California, he landed at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2004. His projects include NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (formerly WFIRST), the European Space Agency's Euclid mission, and the Vera Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). All of these are designed to study "dark energy," the hypothesized cause of the Universe's accelerated expansion. Dr. Kiessling is a JPL Research Scientist investigating dark matter and dark energy through weak lensing analysis of N-body simulations. She earned a B.Sc. (Hons) Space Science at LaTrobe University, Australia and later earned her Ph.D. Astrophysics at University of Edinburgh, UK. Alina is a member of Euclid and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope Dark Energy Science Collaboration (LSST-DESC) and was a consultant on the WFIRST-AFTA Science Definition Reports. Additionally, she is co-leading the development of the 20-20-20 Airships NASA Centennial Challenge to develop stratospheric airships, with the expectation that these will become low-cost platforms for the astrophysics (and Earth science) missions of the future. Professor Emeritis of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and co-founder of the Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative, Dr. Levin has participated in over 40 oceanographic expeditions. She monitored cold seep sediments, checking the interaction of fauna with flow and reporting the first review of the different size groups of organisms. The Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative, which she founded, is a group that seeks to integrate science, technology, policy, law and economics to advise on the management of resource use in the deep ocean in order to maintain the integrity of deep-ocean ecosystems. In 2017 Dr. Levins founded the Deep Ocean Observing Strategy (DOOS), which outlines the requirements for future deep ocean observations.

McFarlane's background includes international ocean policy development, undersea systems design and manufacturing, oceanographic research, marine operations, training, and business management. His experience in all facets of subsea development, research, and operations has provided him with a unique perspective on the marine environment and the stewardship of this natural resource. Mr. McFarlane is an experienced ROV pilot and has logged over 10,000 hours of piloting time, primarily for oceanographic research.
